From time to time, we need to get away in nature to relax and breathe - no matter how much we love the buzz in the city...
Madrid offers a great variety of parks that afford us to enjoy nature and its perks.
I am not just talking about the Retiro Park, which is probably the first one you would go to or think of.
Park de Manzanares
I actually found out about this park while being on a train. I saw a statue on top of a hill and I was wondering "what is this?" So I looked it up on Google and went there on a weekend.
This park goes along the River "Manzanares" and offers a score of space for playgrounds, having long walks, relaxing on a bench or laying on the grass.
If you walk all the way to the end of the park, there is an newly built open air/outdoor amphitheatre. If you walk up the steps, you can sit or lay down there and enjoy an incredible view over the city. You can see the skyscrapers from the Gran Vía, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral and the financial district.
I you follow the way to the statue, walk up the hill and you´ll see an abstract gigantic head of a woman with circles around her head, epitomizing her thoughts.
From this platform, you have the most amazing view over the city of Madrid as well as over the park on the other side.
The Park also has a soccer field and tennis court and a little pond with fountains and palmtrees around it.
It is one of my favorite parks in Madrid, highly recommended!!
You can go there by Metro line 3 getting off on the station "hospital doce the octubre" (direction Villaverde Alto).
Park del Oeste
As the name already discloses, it is located in the west of Madrid. I was stunned when I went there for the first time. It is a really spacious park with lawn and green spaces everywhere. And right in the middle, a small creek is running along. What´s so pretty about it is that there are little steps in the creek which makes the water run like miniscule waterfalls.
Absolutely gorgeous!
You can take line 3 all the way to the end until "Moncloa".
Tierno Galvan Park
This park was really close to where I lived in Madrid. It´s near the metro station "Delicias" (line 3).
This park is connected to the Planetarium of Madrid. This park offers two view points, one to the rail station and the other one towards the outskirts of the city. From the second viewpoint, you can actually see the park Manzanares.
Campo del Moro
Campo del Moro is considered as the "forest of the city" and the green lung of Madrid.
It is located in the west of Madrid. The area of el campo is huge, encompassing hiking, walking and biking trails.
There is actually a cable car going from near the Temple of Debod which brings you right into the middle of the park. While being on the cable car, you can enjoy a phenomenal view of the forest as well as Madrid itself.
Highly recommended!! The price is 6€ one way and 12€ per person for a roundtrip.
They also have a family ticket and other discount.
I really love and appreciate the variety and multitude of parks that Madrid has!
Which one is your favorite park and why?
