Let´s talk about art! Madrid is a city that is rich in art. Ensuing from this, it is not surprising that the capital of Spain is home to a multitude of renowned museums.
This post is dedicated to open your creative mind and dive deeper into the fascinating world of art. I will tell you which museums I visited and what I particularly liked about them.
Museum del Prado
This museum is probably my favorite, I visited it three times during my stay in Madrid! The Prado is actually one of the largest and most prominent art museums of the world! It displays a multitude of paintings and artwork ranging from the 13th century to the 19th century.
It exhibits highly praised paintings from Goya or Velazquez, El Greco and so on.
You can literally spend an entire day in this museum since it has so much to offer.
Plan to stay at least four hours in the museum.
Entrance is free during the last two opening hours, general entrance is 15€ and the reduced entrance is 7,50€.
Taking pictures inside of the museum is not allowed, that´s why I only have pictures from the outside. (you can download all pictures from the website!)
Museum Reina Sofia
The Reina Sofia is a modern art museum displaying mostly Spanish art featuring artists such as Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dalí. It possesses one of the world´s largest collections of modern and contemporary art.
It also exhibits paintings of Joan Miró and Juan Gris.
The masterpiece of the museum is the "Guernica" of Pablo Picasso.
The museum encompasses miscellaneous exhibitions and collections, some of which change from time to time.
This museum has 4 floors and a rooftop, so go there with plenty of time.
General admission is 12€, reduced admission is 6€. The Reina Sofia is also free during the last two opening hours.
The Glass Palace and the Velazquez palace in the Retiro park also belong to the Reina Sofia. I highly recommend you going there while you´re at Retiro!
The Naval Museum
The "museo naval" focuses on the Spanish maritime history, offering a variety of old equipment used on board, old ship models, ancient items and collections and maps.
They have huge exhibiton halls where all the rarities are displayed.
The entrance is only 3€.
Matadero Madrid
This modern art and cultural center often has temporary exhibitions. I visited the "Gustav Klimt" exposition as well as the "Frida Kahlo" exhibition.
They use digital technologies to bring paintings and art to life which I really loved- it truely is an immersive experience!
An interesting fact: Before they turned the Matadero in an art center, it formerly was a slaughter house.
I highly recommend checking out their offers when you´re in Madrid.
Entrance is between 10-20€.
