Why you can travel to Madrid on a low budget (curated post)

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

Recently I stumbled upon a fairly compelling blog post that I wanted to share with you.

The article states that Madrid is an affordable city to travel to.

There are a host of activities that are either free or don´t cost much.

It also mentions that on specific days there are time slots where certain activities such as museums or the Royal Palace are free. Furthermore, food, drinks and public transport are pretty affordable too. There are a score of companies offering free walking tours and if you want to see more of the city, the hop-on-hop-off bus is relatively cheap as well. Other famous sights like the Plazas or open-air flea market are for free as well.

The "Puerta del Sol" of Madrid

"It is definitely possible to come to Madrid if you are traveling on a budget. Food, drinks and public transport are pretty cheap, compared to some other European Capitals."

I strongly agree with what the author is discussing. I felt the same way while I was staying in Madrid- there truly are a pelthora of things to do and see which are either free or fairly cheap. Most of Madrid´s attractions such as the Temple of Debod, the Retiro Park with its Glass Palace, the Cathedral Almudena, the flea market "El Rastro" and so on do not cost anything. What I particularly like about Madrid is that the prestigious Museums "Reina Sofia" and the "El Prado" are free during the last two opening hours, there is also a time slot in the afternoon where the entrance is free for european citizens. Firms such as GetMyGuide or GuruWalk offer free walking tours which are based on voluntary tip- I really loved those because the guides are locals. If you want to visit the Royal Palace, it is free during the last two opening hours. If you want to enjoy an affordable rooftop bar, you can go to "Circulo de bellas artes" or go up the "Corte Inglés" at Plaza del Callao.
